TONIGHT!

"I started Wyld Stallions Records as a way of using my already established connections in the music industry (from working for an online music magazine for two years) towards social action. It is a nonprofit record label, which sounds like an oxymoron, but as "Caring is Knowing" shows, can work out. The compilation, to fight AIDS, with all profits going directly to Vermont CARES, includes tracks from NINETEEN local bands. One more band and we would have had to make a two-disc set. The artwork was done by Hilary Glass. The project was very DIY... color copying and burned CDs, but I think the result looks professional. The CDs are being sold for a minimum donation of $5. Several downtown businesses including Pure Pop, Downtown Discs, The Body Shop, The Peace and Justice Center, and Ben and Jerry's are carrying them. There is even a month long concert series at the downtown Ben and Jerry's scoop shop in the works for this spring. Peter Jacobsen (executive director of Vermont CARES) and I are blown away by the response to what started as a little project to waste some time. I'm hoping to now register Wyld Stallions Records as an official nonprofit in the state of Vermont so that we can accept donations to fund future CD projects to benefit various causes. O.P.P. Yeah, you know me Pt. 1 (Updated!)
Eva and I took a walk around Shelburne Far
ms today; I hadn't been there since Angela had her dinner party, and even then it was at night and I only got to see her lovely old home. I had even forgotten how to get there!
It was cold and frozen and dry out, and on the way there it started to snow dried up little potato flakes; the sun was muted and dark in the sky and I was watching trees and new houses go by outside the passenger window. So many cookie cutter homes have popped up between downtown and Shelburne; it's amazing - I understand the necessity to have a home; but who in their right mind would want to live in such a souless box. Somewhere between Eva's and shelburne we
passed an old farm house that was abandoned and boarded up; we both agreed that it should be saved; it made me think about the Seamonster Cartographers, and whether or not
their charter includes invading condemned or publicly off-limits locations... If it does, than count me in; I want to map and photograph abandoned homes.
The first thing I noticed when we pulled onto the estate was a row of barren trees lining the ridge of a hill running perpendicular with the road we were on. They were stately, one and half times the size of any other trees nearby and seemed to represent an "old-guard", keeping a vigil over the past. Indeed they were doing a magnificent job; and when we came around the bend I got my first glimpse of the farm barn, an amazingly well preserved, and! Still functioning animal barn, there's also a cheese making facility, bakery, and pre-school, all which we later took a little snoop around through.

But first we veered off to the right and took a little drive down to the water front and up to the Main House, another stunning brick and mortar ghost for the past; we parked by the water, just down the hill from the house and while Eva did some filming of the giant ice encrusted tree limbs that lined the water front I took in the view, sniffing loudly and squinting my eyes. Across the road was a field that had become a bit of a flood plain recently and had even more recently frozen over,
I took a tenative step down and a deep echoing "KccccccccrrrrraKkkk...." Echoed across the field. This was a challenge I thought!
I very slowly edged myself onto the ice, spider webbing it, but not sending my feet into the 10 inches of water or so that were underneath, about six feet out their was an older portion of the ice that seemed to be frozen much harder; that was my goal... Over my shoulder Eva was marveling at the Ice formations caused by the waves from the lake splashing up onto the fallen tree limbs. A few more feet, and I made it to the safe ice, I let out a frozen "Woop!" in my brain, and did a little victory slide.

Up on the hill, the Shelburne house sat frozen and seemingly abandoned; though I couldn't help feel that everything we were doing was under its watchful eye...
The windows were dark and the icy snowfla
kes that were falling created a sort of veil over everything around us; the only thing I could hear was the sound of my feet on the snowy ice, lake Champlain quietly rolling onto the rocks, and an occasional exclamation from Eva when she would find something new and lovely. Before we got back into the car, Eva asked me what I was thinking about and the best I could answer was that it all felt so mysterious, she smiled and nodded, there was something quite unsettling and yet romantic about it all, the dark cold sun, empty trees, lovely vacant houses and roads, the thin thin ice.

When we got in the warm car she popped a tape out of her player, and popped in another...
"Than we need some music to fit the mood yes?"
I agreed, wondering what she could possibly play to fit the mood; then Morrissey came on the radio crooning "...I said I like it here, can I stay... " And I laughed and smiled.
Eva has posted her first VLOG at Bunnyspice.com, documenting the very same day at Shelburne Farm; it's a lovely peice set to Portishead and amid lovely icey winter moodiness, me... doing Ice Ballet; oh christ...

O.P.P. yeah, you know me. pt 2.
Why do I love to blog? Probably because I'm a voyeur; I love to watch people that fascinate me, how their minds work and how my own does as well. I often feel as much an observer of my own thoughts and actions as I do of others. Blogging when it's good, gives me the opportunity to be the fly on the wall of other people lives, if only a small portion; and generally that portion is one that is prepared and treated for public consumption. I'm guilty of it myself; especially now that Highgate is more frequently viewed I have to fight the impulse to edit out certain things, feelings and thoughts, some of which I'm glad have remained omitted, other things I make mental notes not to censor next time; For the most part though what's on my mind or what's interesting to me, get in here...
Sometimes I feel bad though, like for example that dude who, probably got fired for drinking to much on the job, who has a long commute and a car that needs a new starter, he became entertainment for me; just like that. It's a fine line between information and exploitation...
Though to be fair; one way I try to look at it is like this: That event is one persons private pain, and as long as he can remain anonymous to us, we can consider his situation in an abstract sense and revel in it's inherent humanity; and in our own. Who hasn't lost a job for a stupid reason, been shit out of luck, or just down in the dumps... Those are times, like with a sad song, I need some sympathy, or just some company... And though he probably will never know it, he has my sympathy.

I've been having a torrid grammar-love affair with the semi-colon; these guys are the best, I never have to end a sentence ever!
Wednesday
Overheard @ Work
I was sitting in the backroom at Pure Pop crunching numbers on some mindless Amazon order thingy when suddenly i could hear, loud and clear a voice coming through the ceiling via some water pipes. Aparently it was an employee at Augie's, the bar upstairs from us... for a while i sort of half listened, but after a while i started paying more attention, and before long instead of typing in band names to search for, i was transcribing the conversation.
....said i sound like the other guy that quit, other staff people, if you wanna take the drinks away from us, fine, but that's not what you promised us.
.....valentines day, winter plunge thing, marti gras, you know, it don't cost much, beverage costs is low, beverage costs is not out of control. then he tries telling me i was drunk in here, on top of that my girl's giving me trouble at home and i come in here and my boss is starts telling me he's gonna start changing our benifits, and that's not what i signed on for
... you promised us two drinks at work is ok, yeah well... yeah, he says maybe you got a problem if you have to have a drink at work...
i, that's not what you promised when i moved up here for this job. Yeah... You know me, when i get antagonized i get defensive...
yeah....
anyway i gotta get going gotta put a car starter in my jeep, but i don't get out till after 10....
drivin from burlington, yeah...
Either that or i gotta get up at frickin 6:30 in the morning.
Yeah. Yeah.
bye.
...Tell him this story about how this guys trying to reneg on my drinks!
END.
Poor Guy, sounds like he's got a bunch of shit on his plate and no fork...
Tuesday
Porn.
Food Porn that is. You know it's amazing what comes up when you google "Rich moist Choclatey goodness."
I was poking around the dollar bin the other day and came across "New Miserable Experience" by the Gin Blossoms, and i just had to hear it again; this album was one of the many soundtracks to my drunk driving around franklin county phase, otherwise known as the 90's. Specifically a little song that goes by the name of "Hey Jelousy" and since relistening i have to say that it pretty much holds up; and in some ways is even more poingant; i replaced teenage angst with mid-20 something ennui; but this song still feels good especially after a few drinks, or on a long drive, or both.

Gold Leaf Branches and Lemon Party Politics
Golden Leaf Branches
Compilation
Compilation
We got our Forced Exposure order in today this little number was sitting quietly in the cardboard box; Gorgeous red (that color in the picture is off) and Gold leaf pressed paper sleeve, and three CD's all packed to the gills with tracks from some of the most amazing and demanding artists playing in the underground today. There are 59 tracks, all by different artists and all I believe are completely new or unreleased, I don't even recognize the label they are on; this is something I would expect to see Time Lag put out, and indeed it does tread similar ground as last years amazing Invisible pyramid Box, or to some degree the "By the Fruit you will know the roots" compilations. All the usual suspects are here, and shining, Six Organs, Hala Strana, Lampukello, Lau Nau, Charlambides, Wooden Wand, etc but what makes this more than just another compilation is all the unknowns (at least to me.) Just about 75% of this compilation I've never heard of, even remotely, and many of these tracks by the likes of "The Grey Field Recordings" and "The Weird Weeds" are just killer; As I'm typing this I'm listening to "The Golden Oaks - Growers Communion" and though their is a similarity to many of the artists on this album, all are some variation of spacious, acoustic stringed drones, tape hiss and natural sounds, this track like so many so far, is standing out and standing up; If you need any kind of encouragement to dig out your four-track and head to the woods, than you should give this some attention. After listening to so much trite, over produced nonsense all day, sitting here right now in my headphones and slippers, I feel re-invigorated about making music, and to some extent about the possibilities available to me everyday. To some extent.
Just so you know, I'm not going to buy this cause it's the only copy at Pure Pop, so if one of you does want it, you should call me at work and I can reserve it; or just get it through forced exposure. It's worth the 22 bucks.

"i'll check it out" I said, and Sue was like, "I didn't know you have a blog Clayton..." We all gathered around the computer, I typed in the URL and hit enter... And Well, the rest is up to you to figure out, lets just say it wasn't worksafe. Enjoy at your own risk. Thanks Clayton.

Lemon Party Politics
While I was sitting down at Pure Pop today watching people browse around; trying to guess what people are gonna buy, which is a fun little game; Clayton, a regular pp patron walked in to sell some Vinyl; Clayton is an extremely intelligent, and weird guy with an extremely dry sense of humor and I can never tell if he's bullshiting me. Once at a party he convinced me that he was molested by a priest as a child. He was either drunk, or pretending to be drunk and would come up to me intermittently though the evening, all quiet and serious and say something like "... When I was in boarding school; my priest... Would put his finger in my butt crack..." Or "He would tell me I was in trouble and make me go in the closet with..." And I mean, when someone says that to you, when they've been drinking, or otherwise you have to consider the fact that they may be telling the truth. Well he wasn't. He drew a picture of herb with Crayons that said "My daddy says you're a foreigner and that you can't be trusted."So anyway, he comes up to me and says:

Notes:
It's winter again. Snowing even.
Ryan Power loves the Pretenders.
The Super Armatron is loud and impractical
writing notes on your palm is not a good idea, it's better to write on your forearm.
80's fascination continues, Eurythmics and Orb B-sides (thanks Breiner)
Talk Talk is next, Ben?

Do and Don't
DO: Listen to Stereolab's Dots and Loops while multi-tasking, you will get everything done, and done well.
DON'T: Ever eat a "Mama Celeste" Mini Pizza, at least when it's been cooked in the microwave at Pure Pop... half of it was nuked, the other half was cold; i ate the whole thing w/ maple sausages and now i'm gonna go hurl.
DO: Eat Stonyfield Farms maple Yogurt. YUM!

Michelle's 7 1/2
Michelle posted a great comic about giving the folks from "His name is alive" a place to stay for the night. They played a show up in Montreal with Low; I didn't make it up though I wanted to, but apparently it was a great show.
What is it about sad songs that we love so much? This is an open question; tell me why do we listen to sad songs; what is the reasoning - Chris at work explained sad songs as being emotional catalysts, or rather a way to embellish ones own emotions, I personally see it as company, I always feel better when I find a song to match my mood; what are they for you?

Tonight, (Sunday) at 9pm the new episode of the Deadbeat Club debuts!

d. I havn't seen the final edit; but from what i have seen you can expect many things, including: drama (the Offasty!), excitement (Figure skating), social commentary (bolsheviks!), Culture (Indie comics!) and much much more; plus if you look closely enough, little ol' me might be making an appearance; in comic form that is.

Migration

When I got up to the store, I found my checks, finished up my bills and pet my old dog Bean for a while; Across the driveway sits my old house and I had time to kill before I had to be back to Burlington to eat lunch with Sarah and everyone. No ones lived there for a few years, my father moved in with her girlfriend, me and my sister live here in tow

Everytime I walk in the place I'm always struck by how sad it feels; I can remember and JB can attest that their was a lot of good time in this place. Th

But now there wasn't much of anything; I headed upstairs and kicked around in my room; I found a nice o

I dug out some old photos that were stacked neatly in the back of my closet like I had put them there for some important reason; one that I suppose wasn't important

The ride back to Burlington was quiet and I didn't listen to anything; just smoked cigarettes. The process of driving to Highate always feels like I'm shedding layers, and the return trip leaves me feeling a bit raw. I have this past that I barely remember; and because of circumstances most of the things that ca

When I got back into town I had to force myself to go out to meet Sarah and everyone. I wasn't feeling so talkative, nor was I feeling bad, just confused; in my mind I kept rolling over thoughts and pictures; emotional triggers. The pine tree forest out back, the barn, the Methodist church

I finally made myself go to lunch and it was good thing I did, my friends always re-enforce me and instill me with warmth and by the end of lunch I was right as rain again.

Wednesday
Cutest Window in Burlington
There's been much debate in the community as to who has the cutest Window/hanging plant combo in Burlington, well - I'm here to set things straight. The Obvious and hands down winner of this prestegious award goes to none other than Ben Hedstrom and Angela McGregor of that house on South Union. Congratulations you crazy kids, you earned it!
Speaking of earning it; in the last two days I've listened to the new albums by The Flaming Lips and The Arctic Monkeys, and all I can say is... What the F, is up with that. My passport picture is more original than that, fucking Dug Nap! For Christ sakes, is more original than that! Ok, ok... Actually, the Flaming Lips could be cool; I'll be giving it more scrutiny soon enough, my first listen made me think "Prince was gunned down by ruthless Detroit drug traffickers, but was saved by his heart of gold rookie cop sidekick and with the aid of modern science and corporate interests has returned as some sort of psychedelic disco-bot." (that actually, sounds like it'd be cool, but it wasn't that cool actually.)
However! It only took me one listen to the arctic poop slingers to cause me to unconsciously write on my hand "arctic monkeys suck." God. Franz F'in Ferdinand is better than these guys. How are they #1 in England right now; I dunno. It's the same godam thing over and over again, stabby guitars, yelling vocals, near-emo passion, w/ that ironic indie-rock twist; Christ - If you wanna fun rockin modern album with little filler and lot's of killer, than maybe check out The Exploding Hearts, at least they died rocking and rolling; that's pretty cool right?
Finally, Nest Material. Will be releasing it's first full length within the next two weeks, entitled "Metaphysical Graffiti" Details are hard to come by but I was able to get my hands on the B-Side to the Second single, entitled "7r@mpl3d uNd3r F007"
