Santa Jay Came at last!

I knew he'd come - or at least, he'd drop my pressent off at the Williston UPS branch. I was so excited to see that cute little green package, (wrapped so professionally, with such austerity...) I just had to open it! Even thought it was 5 days after christmas...

"What is it?" i thought as i tore into the tightly bound package...
A TV VCR Combo? A baby brother? Perhaps a Cheese sampler from Dankin Farms!

Mayhaps the complete set of original transformers action figures, or
maybe that totally awesome Voltron set made out of metal...

What is this?!
OMFG
It's Franz Shubert's "Death of a maiden" and "trout" Quinet!
Oh how did he know that devious Santa Jay!

YAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!

Ahahahahah ahahahaha YAAAAAAAAAY!
So much joy and happiness flooding through my body!
This is the Best Christmas ever!
Thank you Santa Jay (for serious.)
10 points to anyone who can guess the movie in the background.
JB you don't count.

A little Adendum: Right after i posted this i was reading some of Eric Olsen's posts (mostly to make sure i didn't rip him off again) and i came across his post referring to Casey's post about the New Age dude and his book etc etc, anyway, he wrote a great synopsis of the effects smoking DMT and i laughed my ass off, so... I'm ripping it off and sticking some of it here, you can read the rest on his Blog, thanks Eric good stuff!
"... There were 6 or 7 of us, in the tiny, spare, filthy kitchen of my 4th floor walk-up, and we smoked this thing that tasted like we were smoking tires-- no, it was worse, it was more concentrated, like we were funneling a buring tire dump right into our lungs. But I kid you not, it was like this: you got the joint, took a long toke, tried to hold it in a bit, and as you passed it to the person nest to you-- yeah, about the time it left your fingers and you tried to bring your hand back-- you were peaking. You were high like you're high at the very peak of an acid trip-- you know, the thing you have 2 or 3 hours of acclimating to, that state that you actually bloom into...you know the point I'm talking about. Well, imagine going from stone sober to Stonehenge in 3 seconds-- yeah, all of a sudden your hand, the one that just passed a joint, is now a Wandering Jew that needs watering, but your other hand is no where to be found so in order to save the dying plants life, you manage to convince everyone/thing (you're not so sure what the hell that thing is that is standing where Allison was a second ago, but....) to spit on your hand-plant. And it'd be like that for, oh, 10 minutes ... and within 30, you were sober again ...."|the rest|

Excuse me Mr. Claus

If you would be so kind:
I spent a lot of time reading the Illuminatus! Trilogy five or six years ago, it blew my mind, not to mention it was completely absurd. Throughout it there are contradictory quotations from this book, also penned by RAW and others.

Soundtrack to The Hired Hand; A western Peter Fonda did right after Easy Rider, aparently it's a great movie, i havn't seen it, but i do have the soundtrack (on mp3) What i really want is the Vinyl. Very hard to come by . But if you get the chance take a listen, this album predicts the entire free noise folk sound by like 40 years... Matt Valentine, Tower Recordings, Buried Civilizations, the whole Jewelled Antler crew... A contemporary of Lovecraft, though even less recognized in his day, i've always had a soft spot for their inability to discern their own reality from the worlds they create on paper... adds a bit more creepiness than usual to a late night reading.
My friend Sara Paule used to play lots of various classical records around the house, often they'd just sort of float around and be generally pleasant, and other times, i would stop and be forced to listen; Schubert was one of these. I don't know what we listened to, but i know Bernstein come recommended, and i also know that these later works, including his unfinished, as he approached his young death, were some of his more pained and emotive pieces. Recommended for anyone interested in later Romantic period Classical music.

I'll be setting up my own domain and designing my own website come spring; integrating a blog system is an important step - i recently installed a bBlog on my test server; was a bit of a pain in the ass; i know nothing about PHP or mySQL, so it'll be interesting to see how that works out.

This is awesome... Every video that New Order put out, including new videos made especially for this collection, plus the orginal 30 minute Documentary of the band expanded to 70 minutes... that's alot of extra footage... awesome. Here's their video for Perfect Kiss; a great early video concept of "filming the band performing the song live in the studio." Plus i love watching Peter Hook play bass; dude is so good.

I've been meaning to check out some of Warren Ellis' comics for a while and this comes highly recommended; There a few pages where driving through LA, Desolation Jones, and ex-MI6 secret agent and a friend discuss the idea of Post Structuralism; that buildings and cities like LA are designed not to be lived in, but to be driven through... Sounds like a fun read.
Last but defiantly not least; The Complete Factory records design collection by Peter Saville; if you're wondering if you've seen his work before you probably have. There's a companion book simply called "Designed by Peter Saville" by Peter Saville. I'll take this too.

(ps Santa, you can click the pictures to find out where your elves can find them.)

Cutting down Trees

Outside of my recent, almost entirely all consuming obsession with New Order, I've had the chance to give a few new and excellent albums a go through. And since yesterday my obsession finally peaked w/ the arrival of the 18 N.O. albums (movement up to Technique), 12" and 7"s i won on Ebay, i may soon have even more time to put towards listening to new music...

Or maybe i could start a NO remix project... yeah....

No!

Beach House - S/T
I took a drive on Sunday up the F.C. to find a tree to chop down and display ceremoniously in my living room. It was a great sunday to be in Vermont; there was snow on th ground, the sun was blasting, and the air was clean. I grabbed my Ipod, my spirits, a coffee and hit the road. This was the first thing i played, and it lasted almost the entire trip to my friend Johns organic farm; I hadn't heard it yet, but picked it up on a hot tip from AQ.

It was pefect. exactly what you want to listen to while driving through a sunny winter landscape... so much warmth, yet w/ a certain cold detactment. Buzzy organs, crunchy spare percussion, and boy girl vocals w/ that west coast lackadaisical hum and strum; equal parts Beach Boys, Yo La Tengo and yes, Broadcast.

and so i don't step all over AQ; here's what they said:

Wow! We haven't been this smitten with a debut release in quite a while. Didn't know much about this Baltimore duo but we do know, the second this record we laid ears on this the first time, we were immediately seduced by the glorious sounds within. Hazy, daydreaming pop with equal parts magic, mystery and dreamy darkness, all drenched in beautiful melodies and sincere sensuality. Kind of made us think of Broadcast taking a warm bubble bath with Coco Rosie. Lights out, candles burning, bubbles floating, reverb dripping. There is a timelessness in these songs that is so evocative, Warhol's factory, a summer twilight in Southern California in the '70s, an abandoned art studio in the UK. You can never quite put your finger on exactly where these songs are drawn from but in the end it's music truly unique and wonderful. A mysterious voice, a haunting presence and songs carry you off, eyes closed, to somewhere much more enchanting then wherever you really are. So nice!

"This is why events unnerve me,
They find it all, a different story,
Notice whom for wheels are turning,
Turn again and turn towards this time,
All she ask's the strength to hold me,
Then again the same old story,
Word will travel, oh so quickly,
Travel first and lean towards this time."
-Ian Curtis

On the way home, i needed a pick me up - the tree was cut and loaded in my Tacoma, and the sun was already on its way to bed. I had stopped in to visit my grandmother, she still lives alone, despite having had a stroke and a suffering from a potentially fatal aneurysm in her stomach. She was sad; she had gone to her monthly Widow's support group and all the ladies their had been talking about how they're going on cruises for the winter, or trips down south, or even Europe... but because of her stomach, she can't go anywhere and she's stuck here for the winter.

I sat on the floor and played w/ her weird cat Minew and listened to her roll off half-connected stories about my grandfather, how because of a heart condition he wasn't supposed to live past 18; but made it almost to 80 - and her uncle who was a secessionists for Quebec; how when she was a girl they would smoke corn silk, and when she was in her 20's she traveled to Spain and Tangiers She even informed me, seemingly out of the blue, that

"Your grandfather and I never had sexual intercourse till after we were married...."

leaving me smiling awkwardly and wondering how to respond to that, before i could respond she turned her attention back to the cat. I missed out on so much not being born till the 80's...

So on the way home i listened to more New Order...

Re-Dub the Christmas Spirit

The remix and the mash up have finally made their way to the furthest depths of popular culture, the Christmas special. Frosty and Ralphy, Burger Meister and Charlie Brown, those mice... that live in that clock, in that one.... These films hold a special place in my heart, a place that is 1 part, "I get to stay up late and watch cartoons!" 1 part, "This means Santa is coming" 1 part, "Christmas Vacation!!!" 1 part, "I drank the eggnoggy, i'm gonna make sicky." and 1 part "a squirt gun that squirts jelly.... This shit is creeping me out..."

First up, the Classic Charlie Brown x-mas, there are tons of over dubs for this one - Most recently, an edit by the cast of Scrubs; then there is the classic "Kwanza"version. This one, however really does it for me, focusing on the end of the movie when Charlie asks what the meaning of Christmas is, i won't give it all way, but one line of Linus's famous response goes:

"When we were babies, our parents made a conscious decision to deceive us. They created a bunch of fairy tales like Santa Claus and baby Jesus to give us kids false hope, and to comfort themselves as they approached death.”

Later they tie Charlie to his tree and burn him in a Pagan ritual. Awesome!

Next up is a remix of the classically terrible Frosty the Snowman. Telling the Frosty tail as a case of a drifter (no pun intended) come to town, and engaging in all sorts of lascivious activities w/ the town children, that later leads to his trial and conviction.... All set to some version of "Come to Daddy" Soooo creepy. About as creepy as the original, actually.

I found a few of these over at 10 Zen Monkeys- he's got a few more that are well worth watching, plus a great article.

Luke won't let me post a link to these (and a few more,) Ebay auctions; he's got dibs. they sure is perty though. These guys are all pre-coleco, most of them only ran a few carts; many just one. Most probably ran you about the same amount you'll pay for them now, but only in sepia toned 1970's money. Money w/ polyester pants and hecka-chops.

Me i want a Wii, but i'd settle for an X360. PS3, can eat shit.

So what!

.. if i'm drunk, this is the coolest thing ever! The Nietzsche Family Circus, random family circus, paired w/ random Nietzsche quotes = absurdist awesomeness. refresh at your own risk! |Linky-poo|
"Out of damp and gloomy days, out of solitude, out of loveless words directed at us, conclusions grow up in us like fungus: one morning they are there, we know not how, and they gaze upon us, morose and gray. Woe to the thinker who is not the gardener but only the soil of the plants that grow in him."

Are you prepared for my righteous Christmas tree pics btiches?!

Thursday

There's the Bastard!

32.333 repeating, of course.

Ok, I don't play world of Warcraft, their aren't enough hours in a day as it is; not to mention i've already got clan duties to attend to in Call of Duty. But WOW has become the largest and most played MMPOG in history, and more importantly, a pop culture phenomenon. This is old hat, you knew this, even if you only check you're email on your roommates Commodore. You've seen the South Park episode, or heard it mentioned on various "news" stations. Whatever.

But chances are you havn't actually seen what the game is really like; how it's played and what actually happens in game. Well; here's a prime example and a hilarious one at that; this too is very old hat; at this point "Leeroy Jenkins" is synonymous for "idiot" or "hothead" in most online communities, and i doubt it'll be long before we start getting videos from Iraq w/ Coalition troops and freedom fighters alike running into battle (and certain death) under the battle cry of "LEEEEEERRRROYYYYYYYY! JENKINNNNZZAAAHH!!!"

For those of you who need an explaination of what you're seeing, i'll explain. In WOW, you going on quests, for experience, a good way to do this is to team up with others, sometimes as a clan or guild. Often times, rooms are filled w/ ALOT of monsters, and takes a considerable amount of strategy and planning to conquer. This involves planning out tactics, "Buffing" (casting power enhancing spells on each other.) queuing up appropriate potions and spells, readying weapons, etc. That's what all the "Marglock, cast burn witch hand on Sleegdore." talk is.

This can take a little while; but is often necessary; this clan even has someone crunching the numbers to give a probability of success, hence the "32.333 repeating" awesomeness. That's some uber-|337 shit.

Unfortunately our Hero Leeroy, couldn't wait any longer.

Now Leeroy is a member of that esteemed vanguard of internet idiots, right up there next to the numa numa kid, the light saber kid, and that monkey that sticks his finger up his own ass, smells it, and falls out of his tree. Here below, is his legacy:

and on Jeopardy too.

Wednesday

He Came!!!

JB kept a close watch out the window, we thought we could get the drop on ol' Pete, but under the cover of night he swooped in and left us with sweets and some sour remarks. (that son of a gun...)

Attached to the Toe of my chuck is a tag that reads :

"Tanner has a way with the Ladies
his long locks really drive them crazy
from one to another he quickly moves
while giving black peter attitude"

While this all may be quite true, i don't like the tone he's taking;
Oh mark my words black peter, if i ever find you, we'll see who has the last laugh! We'll see!! *shakes fist at sky*In the mean time i'm gonna munch all this delicious candy. How did Black Pete know i love sour gummies? Perhaps there is a clue in there, who have i given attitude to lately? hmmm....

Krampus, Zwarte Piet, Zwarte Piet, Krampus.

Ok, so guess what tonight is? Krampasnacht!

That's German for Santa's evil friend is gonna put something in my shoe. wicked!

i got this cryptic message the other day:

Hark! all ye monsters of raging sea: in Burling-town this Wednesday eve, Saint Nicholas and I, Black Peter, will be! Should you wish to receive your due compensation for a year's worth of laughter, tears, and frustration out on your front stoop, please leave a shoe and ne'er you expect what is coming to you. should you be doing so please r.s.v.p here, at this dispatch, to Black Peter, it's me. don't forget to send your address for Black Peter and Saint Nick have no GPS should you live outside of this fair town, bring a shoe to your friend's and drop it right down or better yet, borrow half of a pair and tell your friend to put it right there just one more thing that you should know, by horseback we shall trudge through the snow our mare needs carrots and bits of hay to help us be on our merry (or not so) way for those of you who are poetry-lame we'll spell it out so you can get in on the game: Who: Black Peter and Saint Nicholas Where: In Burling-town When: Wednesday evening, 7-11pm What: tidings in your shoe Why: google it, assholes Signed, Saint Nicholas, by way of his slave, Black Peter

----------------

after a little research (on Molly's blog) i figured out where i'd heard of this guy before... it's Krampus! He just changed his name, dropped the horns, and put on blackface when he moved from Austria to South Africa the Netherlands... (always trying to stay one step ahead of the man, that man being Saint Nick.)

Anyway, you can check Wiki's Piet page, or check out more krampus pictures, and some history from Molly, or read the Wiki, or read this interesting first hand encounter with Krampus. I'll keep you all informed on what Ol' Zwarte Krampy leaves in my shoe (i hope it's Doc Shoal's medicated foot powder.)

Notes about the Show

Click the picture to see more weird communist architecture

Thanks Avey, Kria and Greg!

  • I was psyched to see a full house, it's been so long since i've been to a show in Burlington that got the audience it deserves (while in the next room over "Yonder Granola turkey Mountain funk Express" is turning people away at the door.)
  • Two pints in 20 minutes for me is all i need.
  • Greg's set was huge, my favorite performance by him since an early Narthex performance. I was sitting on the floor w/ my back against the wall, vibration city. Everything in his set felt fluid and natural, nothing out stayed its welcome, yet everything seemed to moved like a glacier. Superpulse -> Drone violin; but the real clincher for me was around the time the vocals came in; usually Greg's voice and styling are of a serene nature, repetitious chanting. But this time there was some raspiness to his voice, even maybe some pain, i couldn't quite tell but it added a human quality that i made the set that much more sympathetic to me.
  • Turned out Greg has a sore throat and cold.
  • Avey and Kria were sitting on the floor next to me for greg's set; they were sitting side by side leaned up together, hold each other's hand. At one point i was spacing out and smiling and i opened my eyes and Avey's watching me and he smiles really big, i get embarrassed.
  • Kria is the definition of precious, i thought Angela and her would have to have some kind of epic (though twee) battle for precious queen status; a cupcake baking competition utilizing red pandas a sou chefs, using only rainbows and yarn as ingredients; something like that.
  • Avey was wearing a cosby sweater. and rocking it.
  • Did i mention the hipster quotient was the highest it's been in Burlington in years? I was sitting behind a dude that must have been that dude w/ the fro' from TV on the Radio.
  • Avey and Kria played for a LONG time, but it didn't feel like it. It felt like magic - like love i guess. They had a report w/ each other that seemed so natural, amourous even, and with the crowd they were relaxed and friendly. At one point they experienced some feed back, stopped the song, which had already been building for 6 minutes, and after apologizing and laughing it off, started right back into it. just like that.
  • Kria makes his sound w/ her voice like a bird. when i was sitting on the floor w/ Jenny i imagined Kria's voice to be coming from Moaning Murtle's hovering ghost. I was having fun w/ that image and wispered it to Jenny, she smiled but didn't know who i was talking about, i said you know, from Harry Potter - she laughed, and said "No, my mom would though." i forget i'm a dork sometimes.
  • What did they sound like? Well, i guess you could call it an inspirational and not altogether predictable amalgam of Mum and Animal Collective. Some real moments of beauty that more than once had me smiling dumbly.
  • Their sound reminded me of garlands, tinsel and ornaments, and a few strands of popcorn, wrapped around thin air; i often heard keys and guitar, two voices, and a whole host of various scrapes, and woops, hickups and chirps; There was a Kazoo; and i thought it could fall apart any second, but it never did, and was instead very beautiful and thought provoking.
  • There was a lyric at one point, near the end of their set, where Avey sings about
  • "sitting and eating w/ the people, and laughing at the steeple, because hell is my bad thoughts."
  • it reminded me of that old hand gesture / song they'd teach you in bible school, where you lace your fingers together and make a door and steeple out of your thumbs and index fingers respectivly, and sing something like "Here is the church and here is the steeple, open the door and see all the people!"
  • There was one song bout the two baking bread. and another song about having a lovely picnic on a summer's day, and then emptying out the picnic sac, and crawling in it for a snog, and then getting caught by a cop. There was also a song about a fetus, but i think that one was metaphorical. Actually, probably not.

Wowee ma' that old fart sure is a peckerhead!

Anyway - Start your engines, we've got 2006 Listmania, but the only one i care about is over at False 45th. I still read them though, they're fun, and if i try real hard sometimes i find a list that's really fun. Here are a few samples from some i read this morning.

28. The Disappearance of Independent Record Stores
Sure, the big-chain megamarts save you a few dollars. But do their employees know you by name? Will they hook you up with unexpected new imports? Will they ridicule you when you mispronounce Sufjan Stevens’s name? For music geeks, losing the mom-and-pop stores is like losing a musty, nerd-filled home away from home. (Blenders top 50 worst)

Amen to that one.

"What's going on, what's going on!"

So Brian over at False 45th has kicked off his year end music prefered by musicians round-up. Starting w/ Greg Davis; nice list, or at least, i think it is, since I've only listened to about 2 of those bands.

I'm going to suggest right now that Sevendays talk w/ brian about featuring this in their year end editions. Would be a good read.

JB over at "The Leduo" - posted about the newish breakfast joint in town, Magnolia.

Jay over at Spitting out teeth has posted three of his experimental films set the music of local bands, Cancer Conspiracy, The Interior, and Nest Material - Awesome. Here's the one he set to Nest Material's "Ghosts of Dead Kids":

And Nick at "Jenks Uber Alles" dropped his phone in his soup.

Sunday Drive

I'm getting all Phil Colin's about the weather. I know it's gonna snow, i can feel it, coming in the air tonight. Oh lord. When it gets cold like this, all i want is for it to snow. I don't snowboard, i don't ski, i don't really even do anything in the snow, but i need a reason to justify wearing all these layers and feeling the sharp stab of frozen snot in my nose.

But really it's because for at least the first month, it's so magical.

Yesterday was the perfect day for a drive, and since it's been a while since I've taken a drive and gotten out of my Burlington headspace, Jen and I decided to head to Vergennes for lunch at Eat good Food, unfortunately Vergennes seemed to be closed for the day. Nothing was open, but hey that's cool, working on a Sunday is for losers.

So we got on the road again, generally i love to drive, i don't care where, and i can do it for hours - when i drove out west with SP, i drove the whole time, the same on the way back even though Adrienne was with me. I find driving to be like meditation; my focus is on the road, and might higher functions are watching the scenery - i have many thoughts but nothing can occupy me the way it can normally. Perhaps it's also because i can smoke cigarettes and drink coffee and listen to music. Simple pleasures.

We headed off, i was thinking maybe Bristol - but Jen suggested Middlebury; and i was surprised to say I've never actually been there; I've only ever passed by it going down Route 7. Another great thing about taking drives, i forget to worry about doing my laundry. I'm currently in the "scratch and sniff" phase of my laundry cycle. Charming.

Anyway - we stopped in Middlebury, and explored around - there's this really great smelling little Indian restuarant off the main drag, down by the river (where i shot my baby.) i think it's called "A taste of India" we had to try it out; but when we walked in, passed the "OPEN" sign, and the blinking white christmas lights, there was no one in the place. when i said "Hello?" an Indian man shot up from one of the booths he had been sleeping in, his had pulled over his face "We're Closed!"

Ok, no luck there either. I bet it was good food too. Next door to the indian restaurant was a little used good store, sort of a mini recycle north, they were closed, but outside were a bunch of donations, baby clothes, vases, pots and pans, and a little bag of records, so we rooted through them - i almost snagged a live Willie Nelson, but eventually put it back, i don't know enough about Willie to grab any old album, but it did have a "Red headed stranger medley" on it... Jenny grabbed the Disney soundtrack to Sleeping Beauty. score.

After browsing around the local bookstore for a while we got some good advice on food and headed to the the "Two Brother's Tavern" back up by where we parked. I highly recommend it. We got a big bowl of clam Chowder, jalepino Corn bread, Jenny got a Burger, rare as fuck, and i got their Thanksgiving sandwhich, cran mayo, stuffing, turkey, onions, chedder, bacon, tomato, lettuce, on texas toast (christ.) a beer for me, a glass of wine for the lady. Well worth the wait.

It was dark on the way home, and we listened to Will Oldham and the Magnetic fields, both of us were a little tired, but i'd say we were content.

Saturday

Michael Richard's public apology

After stealing Casey Rea's routine and butchering it in front of a predominantly humorless black audience, Michael Richards found himself in a bit of hot water; he finally came out recently and apologized:

Thank you Michael Richards.

Highgate Podcast #2

Welcome to December, though it may not feel all that Wintery right now - soon i hope. The forecast is finally calling for snow and yesterday's 60 degree weather is fast fading. Outside it's drizzling, and i thought i noticed some of that turning quietly to flake. With any luck, I'll spend next weekend trudging through the snow looking for the perfect evergreen (i can already smell the pine needles...)

Nows a good time to offer up my second podcast of the year. Some of you may remember my first, titled Slowstorm; a mix i made last January while considering slow falling snow and hazy melancholy memories. I'm going to offer it up again soon, and the track listing is here. Unlike some casts, i don't offer any introductions or chitchat, other than to preface them here. They do follow a theme, and this new one titled "Glowing light on Snow" is my first Holiday offering - I had to dig hard to find songs that matched thematically, most of my music is decidedly "cool" i guess is the word, especially in the last year - (i have another cast I'll be offering up of that soon enough.)

Most of the tracks have no direct holiday reference, save Will Oldham's "Christmas in the Mountains" but i tried to choose songs that captured a warmer, thoughtful sense, a bit of lush, a bit of love, some bells and harmonies, something you can listen to some night when you're relaxing and watching the snow fall, or walking up church street all bundled up and dodging scores of consumers, or maybe taking that long drive out and around to enjoy the new snow. - Of course i never stray too far from the melancholy, but for most of us the Holidays while we enjoy them, have a way of illuminating our loneliness. So there are tracks for those moments too...

Hope you enjoy,

Tanner
